NYFS coordinator to step down

Norwich Youth and Family Services (NYFS) coordinator Angelo Callis has announced that he will be retiring this fall.

Callis has been with the agency for 34 years and considers it "a gift", but says he is ready to retire. The 58-year-old became the coordinator in 2016. He says over time the agency has become what families and their children in the city need, and has gone from offering therapy to being proactive in the lives of youth through diversion and intervention.

The Norwich Police Department is involved in the NYFS Juvenile Review Board, which has first-time juvenile offenders avoid a criminal record by making an apology, and undertaking a school program, restitution, and community service. Most programs are for older children but the agency is planning to get involved in K-4th grade students.

According to Mayor Peter Nystrom, Callis has shown commitment to city youth like no other, and he was particularly impressed with his ability to help children turn into better and stronger adults. Nystrom said he will miss Callis and it will be difficult to find someone to fill his shoes. The city is presently accepting application and will do so until August 16.

Callis, whose final day of service will be October 20, believes that his replacement will love the job and find it exciting. Although he will not be working with Norwich Youth and Families, he expects to continue working with the community as a therapist in a private practice.
