Hartford's First Poet Laureate is an associate professor at Three Rivers Community College in Norwich.
Frederick-Douglass Knowles II has been teaching English at the college for over a decade, and has now been honored for his work. The title allows him to root his history deeper into the community. He also participates in the Pell Grant Second Chance program, working with inmates. Finally, he is part of a various committees and organizations using art to make an impact on community.
According to a press release put out by Three Rivers Community College, Knowles wishes to close the gap between performance and literary poetry, and wants to start a campaign on literacy in the public library system of Hartford and in schools. He notes that poetry has been important in his life and inspired him to be an author, leader, professor, and activist, so he encourages people to pursue their passions in a similar way.
A poet laureate spreads appreciation and awareness about writing, poetry, and spoken words in the area, while also inspiring community pride. According to Mary Ellen Jukoski, president of Three Rivers Community College, the title is a “wonderful honor” for Professor Knowles, and the College shares his pride.
When colleges wish to congratulate their colleagues, a banner printing company can make a professional banner with a literature theme to be hung in classrooms and offices.
