Norwich natives open bargain store

A new discount store opening in Norwich, run by a local couple.

August 1 is the targeted opening day for Steals & Deals. It will be at 45 Salem Turnpike, which is Norwich Landing, adjacent to Staples. Norwich Landing also has River Valley Surgery Center, a blood donation office for the Red Cross, KFC, Sprint, and Great Scot!

Co-business owner with wife Tammy, Jason Haller confirmed that the store is nearly ready for business. It will sell items from liquidation closeout sales, or those with Boxes that have been opened. Its selection includes clothing, bedding decor, home fixtures, small appliances, cleaning supplies, and tools. Haller said they have a large inventory and should be able to satisfy every customer. The store will have operating hours every day of the week and five employees.

The couple sold merchandise online for four or five years before deciding to buy commercial space to open a store. The store totals more than 8,000 square feet with 5,500 square feet for the sales floor and 2,200 square feet for storage. The owner of the plaza remodeled the exterior, while the Hallers are renovating the inside.

The store is one of many bargain outlets in Norwich and the surrounding area, including a Goodwill store and a Big Lots. Haller believes each store has a unique inventory. Due to its proximity to Staples, the new store will not be allowed to sell office supplies such as Business Cards.
