Norwich hospital aces safety ratings

William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich is one of seven hospitals in Connecticut to have earned an A grade from The Leapfrog Group in hospital safety.

The Leapfrog Group discloses its reports on acute healthcare safety in hospitals in the autumn and spring each year. Since they began in 2012, hospitals from Idaho, Rhode Island, Oregon, Wisconsin, and Hawaii have continued to increase in quality.

The grades range from A to F and take into account 27 different factors. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Medicare and Medicaid Service Centers, and a hospital survey from Leapfrog are a few of the information hubs that highlight the criteria.

According to Leapfrog's CEO and president Leah Binder, the third largest cause of death in the country is medical error, which can lead to an infection, and the public should know which hospitals in their area make the fewest mistakes. Using the reports, patients can determine how efficient their local hospitals are. Along with infections and mistakes, the grades also reflect levels of accidents and injuries.

Over 2,600 grades for hospitals were released at the end of October. Most received a C, and an A was the second most common rating. Only 15 received a failing grade.

High-achieving hospitals can keep staff and patients up to date on their grades through a newsletter, which a newsletter printing firm can create.
