Norwich celebrates its veterans

On Saturday, April 29, the Norwich Area Veterans Council held a memorial service for Vietnam War veterans.

Families, veterans, and members of all of the military branches came to the ceremony in the afternoon on Chelsea Parade. According to ceremony organizer and chaplain of the council Bob Murphy, all veterans deserved recognition, but it is especially important for veterans who were in Vietnam because they were not welcomed home with Banners and cheers of triumph as had been the case for those before them.

There were 14 Norwich men who were killed during the war that Murphy mentioned during the ceremony. The names are also at the Chelsea Parade Vietnam War Memorial Monument.

A wreath was set on the memorial by Montville Vietnam Veteran Robert Crawford and the Norwich Area Veterans Council vice president John Waggoner. Waggoner emphasized the importance of remembering Vietnam veterans because they are often forgotten, largely due to how they were received after it ended 42 years ago.

Veterans Gregory and Marvin Serruto were among those who attended the ceremony. Marvin served in the U.S. Navy and Gregory was a medic in the Army. Marvin expressed his gratitude for the recognition, saying that when he was discharged after the war, it was painful that people often looked down on him for following orders and doing his job.
