New Norwich recreation director starts duties

On November 28, Cheryl Hancin Preston became the new recreation director for the city of Norwich.

The city has not had a recreation director in four years, and her first order of business will be to analyze each of the city's playing fields and courts to determine how to prepare them for the next season of community sports. An area of note is the playground on Mohegan Road near the director's office and next to the tennis courts.

Preston will also meet with other employees of the recreation department, coaches, and groundskeepers to assess the needs of the facilities. The position is part time, but may become full time next year.

Preston expressed her excitement to be given the position and hopes to give back to her community and watch it grow. As a Norwich native, she played various sports throughout grade school, such as soccer and track event. She went to Florida International University where she obtained a master's degree in recreational management and sports. She also has a master’s from the University of Hartford in business administration. Most recently, she had been the recreation director in Colchester. She is certified as an ARC lifeguard, operator of aquatic facilities, parks and recreation professional, and nutritional counselor.

New recreational programs will need permission slips, business Forms, and applications that children and parents can complete.
