Main Street garage repairs up for discussion

Officials in Norwich are contemplating the restoration of a parking garage on Main Street downtown, arguing that it is an important part of the city's commerce.

They have yet to publicly confirm when this is going to happen or the cost of repairs, but a subcommittee of the City Council has called for an assessment of the building and what role it can play in the city.

The four-story garage opens onto Church Street, which is a commercial area and those in favor argue it has great potential if it can be fixed and maintained.

The garage needs several repairs, including a working elevator and upgrades to the sprinkler system and lights. Jeff Lord of the Parking Commission, who built the garage in 1991 for $2.7 million, told the Norwich Bulletin that he would like to see surveillance cameras to control crime. Alan Bergren, Norwich City Manager, stated that it would be best to look at the entire structure rather than pinpoint small improvements.

Currently, the city does not have the money to renovate the garage, but Bergren believes some funds can be spared to maintain it.
