Ideas exchanged over new community center

The Norwich city council recently elected a committee to analyze the expenses of a new community center, and where it could possibly be built.

Deb Hinchey, mayor of the town, met with the committee on December 1 to discuss her concerns. She wants the community center to be in an area of town at which there is public transportation, allowing lower income families to have access to it.

Chairman Steve Becker is eager to discuss how big the new community center will be and how much it will cost. He stated that the center needs to serve as many people as expenses would allow. Research carried out in 1984 suggests that six or seven million dollars would cover a 60,000 square foot space with a swimming pool, auditorium, and 660 parking spaces, but it does not take into account 30 years of inflation.

One possibility for a location is the YMCA located downtown, which appraises for over two million dollars, but that space is also being eyed for a police station. The committee may travel to other community centers in Connecticut to get some ideas, and plans to give city hall its findings by the middle of next year.

When the community center is built, the city can hire a brochure printing company to demonstrate the features of the community center to the residents through Brochures either in the mail or at the front desk.
