The Norwich Historical Society will be sponsoring a walking tour in May at the historic Yantic Cemetery.
Notables of Yantic Cemetery is a guided tour where people can hear stories about famous people from Norwich who were buried in the graveyard. The experience will be led by Dave Oat, a local historian. During the tour, guests will be taught what funerary practices were used in the Victorian era and learn about the history of the monuments built in the cemetery. The length of the route is one mile, and the location will not have wheelchair access or restrooms.
The Norwich Historical Society is an organization that maintains the 1807 Lewis House and preserves artifacts and photographs related to the community’s history. There are three spaces on the organization’s first floor for annual exhibits. The group also organizes educational programs for the Marion Cross School and holds family history workshops each winter. Historical societies such as this may use poster printing to get more locals interested in their educational activities.
The Notables of Yantic Cemetery walking tour will be held on Saturday, May 14 from 10:30 am to noon. There is no ticket price for the experience, though attendees are asked to leave a $5 donation when registering. No dogs will be allowed at the cemetery. All guests are required to pre-register for the tour.
