Griswold Center to undergo rebuild

McCluggage Manor senior citizen residence will have a new neighbor, as Norwich officials plan to erect the new Griswold Senior Center on the next property over.

Initially, the grant for the state approved by the Governor (equaling $343,000) was to add a second floor onto the existing 4,000 square foot center on Soule Street. Tina Falck, director at the center, said that it was supposed to be expanded two years ago, but it would not have been a long-term solution, only lasting five years. She added that the current building does not have enough space for the 450 seniors and the rest of the community that uses the center. In addition, there is not enough parking for guests during events.

Moving it near McCluggage Manor would give more seniors better access to its services. First Selectman Kevin Skulczyck agrees that the move is a positive action since the residents of McCluggage Manor are well suited to the center. It will be built on land given to the housing authority that spans four acres. The committee responsible for the new senior center now has members with commercial construction experience.

The state will pay for an assessment that will list the personal needs of the senior community and start designing the new building. Then, they will ask for proposals. This is an opportunity for a business to work with a printing company to make a professional proposal that will impress those making the decisions.
