Gas line construction hurries along

Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) recently compacted 18 months of work into 18 weeks in completing work on North Main Street and other busy roads, it has said

It set itself a goal of August 27 to finish putting 9,000 feet of gas line into the ground in 70 locations in order to prepare for the Department of Transportation resurfacing over seven miles of road along Route 12 on that date. Since NPU needs approval from the city, timing the installation of the new pipes with repaving the road seemed like the best opportunity.

The high-tech pipe, made of polyethylene, will take the place of the cast iron pipes, which have been in place for 80 years and have weakened during this time. NPU started replacing the old pipes in the 1970s, using plastic as an alternative. Now, less than 15% of the 145 miles of piping is still copper.

Bill Dewey, the foreman of the construction project, states that his men have been putting in extra hours and working consistently to finish on time. The NPU employed seven crews each day to work on the project, which was funded by the rate of gas.
