Drug dog coming to Troop E

Griswold PRIDE, along with businesses and community groups, have raised money to get Montville's state police troop E a police dog.

PRIDE, which works to end drug abuse, raised $3,000 in a month. The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection will use the money for a drug-sniffing dog. On October 29, several members of the organization and community went to town hall to hear about the news including John Connelly, the Jewett City Borough Warden, Dora Schriro, the DESPP commissioner, and Kevin Skulczck, the first selectman. Although the troop has three police dogs, only one knows how to detect drugs. The troop will buy a new dog and train it. Both Griswold and Jewett City are near Norwich.

It gave the intent to gather funds earlier this year. Several groups and churches in the community reached out and donated money to help PRIDE's cause. Dora Schriro believes the dog will be a much-needed addition to the force. Heroin took the lives of around 163 people during the first half of this year, and it's estimated that more than 300 Connecticut citizens might lose their lives due to drugs by the end of the year.

The police could raise more money by featuring the dogs in Holiday Cards and Calendars for sale. Many people enjoy seeing pictures of dogs that help their community.
