On May 6, Norwich students were some of those honored at a banquet in Southington.
The Connecticut Association of Schools hosted the yearly Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Banquet at the Southington Aqua Turf Club. This was the 35th year for the event, and nearly 350 seniors from various public high schools around the state were recognized at the biggest CAS-CIAC event of the year.
According to conference representatives, one female and male senior student athlete from each school is chosen as a scholar athlete. These students have high school careers that excelled both athletically and academically. They must be a role model to their peers though their integrity and personal ethics, as well as act with courage and discipline. Schools that are members of the CAS nominate their students for the award.
Four students from two Norwich schools were recognized - Haley Rose Warzecha and Aidan Miller from Norwich Free Academy, and Erin McBride and Cody Kersteter from Norwich Tech. Coaches, teaching staff, and family attended the banquet, totaling over 1,700 people. Connecticut Sun player, Rookie of the Year for the WNBA, and previous overall number one pic Chiney Ogwumike gave a speech. John Holt, a producer of films, acted as host for the event.
The Connecticut Association of Schools could honor students additionally with a personalized letter of congratulations using the organization's Letterheads.
