Early days
In 1842, Juan Manual Vaca left New Mexico for California with his friend, Juan Felipe Pena. The two applied for a Lihuaytos grant which would allow them to acquire about 4,500 acres of land. Soon after this, Vaca sold part of his land to William McDonald, provided McDonald would agree to use one square mile of the land to create a township. On December 13, 1851, the land was recorded, and Vacaville was born.
