A pilot program to clean the streets of Vacaville is currently underway.
Called Vacaville Clean Streets, the program is designed to create opportunities for employment and pay for unhoused residents of the city. An entirely volunteer-based group of Vacaville Homeless Roundtable representatives developed the program. Volunteers will be trained and will then supervise participants in the program. Participants in the program will receive case management, work incentives, job training, clothing and meals, and gift cards for their efforts.
A person who wishes to participate in the program needs to be referred by the Vacaville Solano Services Corporation or the Community Response Unit of the city. There will be five people initially in the program. Private donations are funding the program and volunteers are the ones supporting it. The volunteers who will be supervisors and the participants will be wearing green T-Shirts with a special Logo Design.
Another benefit of the program will be geared towards supporting the Downtown Vacaville Business Improvement District. There will be cleaner parking lots, gutters, and sidewalks, creating a more welcoming and tidier downtown area. Vice-Mayor Nolan Sullivan said that this program will provide work, dignity, and counseling services for the homeless in the city.
Volunteers and participants are in the downtown area from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
