The Vacaville Police Department is currently running a district commander program designed to increase collaboration and engagement in the community. Each of the six council districts in the city will be assigned a police lieutenant as a district commander.
The field operations lieutenant and the sergeant assigned to each district will establish district commands. These two individuals will encourage engagement by the community in their districts and serve as a resource for information about trends in crime. Such information is often provided in printed format to the community through brochure printing.
The district commander program will also allow for direct communication between residents and the department. Business owners and residents will now have a single point of contact who is knowledgeable about crime and other issues of concern in the community.
The district commander program will also enable collaborative problem solving between the community and the city government using the latest information about trends in crime. The program hopes that community and district command events and dialogue sessions will be on offer in the future.
Joe Allio, Interim Police Chief, expressed his excitement about the district commander program. He said that it will essentially provide a local police chief in each of the districts, allowing business owners and residents to contact them for help with any issues or concerns they may have.
