Captain Ian Schmutzler, captain of the Vacaville Police Department, has been selected by Aaron Busch, Vacaville City Manager, to be the next chief of police.
A nationwide search and an extensive interview process culminated in Schmutzler‘s selection, who will have a new job title to add the next time he puts his business card printing order in.
In a press release, Busch said that Chief Schmutzler has 25 years’ experience in policing and is dedicated to the businesses and residents of Vacaville. He added that Chief Schmutzler is extremely knowledgeable in the workings of the department, and has a vision for enhancing the department and engaging the community.
Chief Schmutzler expressed his honor at being selected to head the department and he feels privileged to being able to serve the community in this new role. He acknowledged the amount of work ahead of him and recognized the opportunity to instill confidence, improve trust, and advance the department. He added that he is hoping that the department will be able to work with the community to confront the challenges faced and celebrate the successes.
Chief Schmutzler has been a resident of Vacaville and worked with the Vacaville Police Department for 22 years. He began his career in 1997 with the Oakland Police Department. His bachelor’s and master’s degrees are from California State University and are in criminal justice.
