Toll roads implement new system

People driving to and from Tustin on Orange County’s toll roads are now paying the road tolls in a new way.

Accountholders have been issued with small FasTrak stickers to use instead of transponders. The discount rates have also changed and new rules apply. For example, new cars have to use temporary paper license plates. Flyer printing at the old toll booths is one way to inform drivers about the new rules.

Drivers passing through toll roads 73, 133, 241, and 261 will be charged electronically. When a driver gets onto the ramp getting onto or exiting a toll road, an electronic scanner will check the car for a transponder and automatically charge the associated account. If the car doesn’t have a transponder, a picture of the car’s license plate will be taken and the driver can pay online later.

Charges vary depending on how large the vehicle is and the time of day. Carpool discounts do not apply on these roads, but drivers using FasTrak stickers will be given a $1 discount on each toll if they spend more than $40 per month on the tolls.

If the drivers do not have funds in their accounts, they have five days to pay the bill online. Failure to do so will result in a violation message received in the mail. First-time offenders will not have to pay any fine, but repeat offenders face a fine of $57.50.
