This summer the question of permit parking will be decided by those most affected - the residents of Old Town Tustin.
On June 6, a plan was unanimously approved by the Tustin City Council to send hundreds of ballots to Old Town residents so they can weigh-in on the parking situation in their area. Before council voted on the proposal that had been drawn up by city staff, they made one substantial adjustment.
Originally it was proposed that only homeowners would be able to cast a ballot to decide the question of permit parking. Changes made by city council allowed tenants in addition to property owners to be given a say. However, each rental unit will be provided with only one ballot regardless of how many may be living there.
If issued, parking permits would cost around $25 per year and cars without a permit would be barred from parking between the hours of 2 am and 6 am. Households would be expected to utilize garages and driveways before expecting to be awarded a permit.
In July, letters will be issued informing stakeholders that ballots will in all likelihood be issued the next month. Notices in the form of Posters or Flyers will be displayed and dispersed throughout Old Town Tustin explaining the issue. Recipients will be given 30 days to mark and return their ballots.
