Orange residents step up campaign against local development

A group of residents is seeking to block a ruling from the City Council which gives developers permission to build 128 homes at what used to be the Sully-Miller quarry just north of Tustin.

The Orange Park Association filed a lawsuit against the City of Orange, claiming that it did not prepare a proper environmental assessment report before allowing the developer to continue. The claimants believe that the review was incomplete and flawed because the city did not look into how the quarry will be restored and cleaned.

Some residents in East Orange are also against the project because of the traffic that it will bring and the potential disruption to their equestrian way of life. The residents were required to submit a petition with at least 7,000 signatures and they got 13,200. Petitioners sometimes visit Print shops to help get their messages out there and attract the right kind of attention.

The City Council approved the development back in October. The developer, Milan Capital Management, said that it will use $4.1m to turn 68 acres of land on the property into a dedicated open space and $1m will be used to make the nature trails more attractive.

The opposing residents’ lawyers pointed out that the environmental review submitted did not identify who would be responsible for maintaining that open space and the trails.
