Orange County economy sees March growth

On April 15, numbers were released on Orange County’s employment situation and Tustin residents will be relieved to know that the news was good.

Thanks to a surge in health-related, business, and professional positions, Orange County was able to bolster its economy in March with an additional 8,800 jobs.

Orange County’s unemployment went from 73,900 earlier in 2016 to 64,200. The added jobs made for a year-over-year increase in employment of 3.1%, although the unemployment rate has remained stable at 4%.

Orange County’s economy wasn’t the only good news; March was a good month for the state as well. California’s jobless rate dropped from 5.5% in February to 5.4% in March. This is noteworthy since March was the first month that California has not been on the list of states with unemployment significantly higher than the country as a whole.

The gap between the U.S. joblessness and that of California is 0.4% now, making its lowest point in nine years. The added jobs reflect a confidence on the part of employers who see their investment in promotional efforts like Mailing services or flyer printing bringing results.

The federal government’s survey of 5,500 households is the basis for the jobless numbers arrived at on the state and county level. Seasonal adjustments are made to the U.S. and California unemployment rates, while Orange County does not make those adjustments.
