Lawmaker proposes making voting mandatory

A lawmaker from the Bay area believes that voting should be made mandatory and he is working on a bill that would make it so.

Marc Levine, an Assemblyman for San Rafael, has put forward a bill that would make so that every person registered to vote in California must participate in elections by casting a ballot. Starting in 2022, voters would be required to vote through the mail or by going to a vote center. When defending his position on making it mandatory to vote Levine went on to say:

“Democracy is not a spectator sport- it requires the active participation of all its citizens.”

Levine also said that California leads the nation when it comes to working on voter rights and making it easier for its citizens. The expanded voted rights in California make it so that the registered voters have greater responsibility to make their votes and ensure the government knows their wishes because of how easy it has become. With all the measures that have been taken, the voters have no reason to be lazy or complacent when it comes to voting. AB 2070 is designed to make it so that every voter in California and Tustin is heard. Stationery printers are often used to Print ballots that are sent through the mail.

When announcing the bill, Levine backed his stance by mentioning that 30 other countries make it mandatory to vote.
