Workshop to share secrets of successful rose pruning

Roses are often thought of as fussy plants, but a Santa Rosa class can help point the way to simplified care.

Rose Pruning and Bare Root Planting Workshop, offered thanks to the Redwood Empire Rose Society, will cover two important steps in looking after roses. Pruning shapes the plant and also increases flower and rose hip production.

The activity will provide an introduction to pruning as well as the tools of the trade. It will open with tool cleaning and sharpening so the attendees can make their cuts cleanly, and it will then be time to move onto pruning. This will include classroom instruction as well as hands-on practice. They will learn how, when, and where to prune, and also how to properly install bare root roses so they have the best chance of doing well.

Home gardeners, especially if they grow species that require specialized care, may appreciate the opportunity to learn at a workshop. Items like plant care cheat sheets filled with helpful tips may be welcome, and can be prepared by local Stationery printers.

This activity, which will help rose lovers take on some “thorny” problems, will be on offer on Saturday, January 6. It will begin at 9:00 am at the Luther Burbank Art & Garden Center. No fee is being charged for the session, but donations will be welcome.
