Sonoma County Fair promises roots and boots

Sonoma is saddling up for its 83rd annual county fair in Santa Rosa. This year’s theme is encouraging the community to get back to the area’s agricultural roots.

This year’s slogan is ‘Back To Our Roots in Cowboy Boots’, and the Sonoma County Fairgrounds are going to be turned into a giant scene from the Wild West, and will pay tribute to the area’s cowboy agricultural history, before wine-making became the predominant economic driver.

The fair has grown over the decades to become one of the most popular in California, according to its website.

The fair is famous for its horse racing and flower show. Wine County Racing runs for 8 of the fair’s 11 days, and this year’s flower show will feature floral displays based on famous country music songs.

General admission tickets are $15. This also includes the horse races, as well as the carnival with rides, favorite fair-foods and free music every night.

There is also a Mexican Village, which a tribute to the local Latino community. The market, mariachi bands and dancers have made this a special attraction at the fair since the 1970s.
