Santa Rosa presentation to discuss details of ducks

Santa Rosa bird watchers, and those who just want to learn more about the area’s wildlife and ecology, are invited to participate in a presentation that has been planned for this winter.

Dave Barry, who is also known to some as ‘duck man’ , will be hosting a talk that will provide insight into the life cycle, feeding habits, and behaviors of wild ducks, geese, swans, and other waterfowl. Barry, who is a certified California Naturalist, will also share facts about these birds that may not be widely known, such as the difference between ducks that dive for their food and those that dabble closer to the surface. A local printer can use digital copying to produce simple wild bird field guides to be given to each person who comes to an event like this.

Those who come to the session will learn how they can identify different species of waterfowl, including how to recognize the males and females of a particular type, as these can look very different. Barry will also discuss why Santa Rosa is so important to these birds, and the role it plays as a stopover on the Pacific Flyway. Attendees will also find out more about the challenges faced by waterfowl and what the public can do to help ensure the long-term survival of these various species of birds.

January 6 will be the date for this presentation, which will be held in Heron Hall of the Laguna Environmental Center in Santa Rosa. More information about the event can be found on the organizer’s website.
