Gardening workshops and sales taking place Sonoma County

In some areas of the U.S., such as Sonoma County in California, it’s time to begin talking about this year’s fall planting efforts. A variety of different events and workshops are set to be held over the next few weeks to help gardeners prepare for the special needs of fall and winter crops.

The Occidental Arts and Ecology Center will have weekend plant sales on August 23-24th, offering hundreds of varieties of both winter and fall crops, all of which are California Certified Organic. All plants are propagated on site. The sales will take place from 9am to 5pm, and one-hour garden tours will be offered at 1pm on Sunday.

At the Harvest for the Hungry garden in Santa Rosa, a free workshop on August 16th covered the basics of gardening for fall crops. The workshop was led by the Master Gardeners in Sonoma County, and took an A-to-Z approach, starting with garden locations and continuing on to working the soil and crop selection. They also provided handouts, created with flyer printing, that offer sampled garden layouts, varieties that tend to thrive in Sonoma County, and the best planting dates for different crops. The workshop took place from 10:30am-12:30pm, and no registration is required.
