Santa Clara goes gaga for garage sales

This April marks the return of the popular Garage Sale Saturday in Santa Clara.

The daylong event encourages thrifty shoppers in the area to get out and find new keepsakes, while also giving residents a chance to clear out items they may not be using anymore.

The event is usually a yearly fixture in Santa Clara, but the turnout has been so large that the city decided to turn it into a semiannual one. So far, more than 60 different families have already registered to sell goods during the sale.

The day is essentially a coordinated set of garage sales that people can hold themselves. Participants must have their own land or a place where they are given permission to hold the garage sale, and they have to advertise it themselves. What the city provides is a website where they can register their sale, list the goods being offered, and the prices for everything. This is added to a master list so bargain hunters can find what they want quickly and go to the right location, rather than visiting one sale after another.

The city stresses that Flyers should be put up only on private property. Anything put up on light poles, fire hydrants, or government buildings will be taken down. It also encourages participants to have lots of change and small bills, as well as Bags and Boxes for shoppers.

The Garage Sale Saturday will be held on April 30 all around Santa Clara. Start times may vary depending on the garage sale in question. For a complete list of locations, items, and prices, as well as Forms to register a sale, visit the website.
