San Rafael gets first woman mayor

A December meeting of the San Rafael City Council was an occasion for the history Books, as the city swore in its first female mayor.

Kate Colin is now the city’s mayor, becoming first woman to hold the post since the city’s charter was established in 1874. Mayor Colin was also the fourth woman to be elected onto the city’s council. Several other women were elected to the council and this is the first time in the history of San Rafael that the entire council has been made up entirely of women. Some people enlist business card printing when they take on a new position.

The outgoing mayor is Gary Phillips who had been mayor for nine years. Councilmember John Gamblin and Andrew McCullough also left their positions on the council. Mayor Phillips was elected to the council for the first time in 1994 and then he became mayor in 2011. Some of the highlights of his time in office include tackling homelessness in the city, and supporting the construction for SMART.

Mayor Colin paid homage to her predecessor by saying:

"He showed up for our residents time and time again, be it at neighborhood gatherings, business ribbon cuttings, or regional meetings. You could always count on Gary to be there.”

One seat on the City Council is now vacant because of Colin’s change of role. The Council has already begun the appointment process.
