San Rafael event to honor nature
An activity taking place in late April is celebrating the natural environment in the San Rafael community.
Clean & Green Day is an event organized by the city along with the San Rafael Clean Coalition and the Downtown San Rafael Business Improvement District. Other collaborating organizations include the Marin Sanitary Service, the Downtown Streets Team, and Conservation Corps North Bay.
The activity is an initiative to improve the environment around the Downtown area as a way to thank the businesses located there and celebrate Earth Day. Volunteers will remove weeds, pick up litter, clean up sidewalk fixtures and parking meters, cover graffiti, and upgrade the appearance of the area’s intersections.
Earth Day originated in 1970, created by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. His co-chair was Congressman Pete McCloskey, with activist Denis Hayes acting as the organizer of the event. What started as a set of “teach-ins” on college campuses blossomed into gatherings in auditoriums, parks, and streets across the country.
Organizers will provide cleaning supplies, grabbers for trash, and gloves. These can be picked up at the City Plaza under the BID canopy. A link to a form to register as a volunteer is available on the website for Downtown San Rafael. Participation is free. The city is also encouraging everyone to shop locally throughout the week of the Earth Day holiday.
Flyer printing on recyclable paper is often something cities will hire when looking to promote events they are putting together. The experience will be taking place between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm on Tuesday, April 22.
