San Rafael event celebrates staple Mexican holiday
An early November event is bringing an important holiday from Mexico’s culture to the local community.
Day of the Dead San Rafael is an annual celebration of the Mexican traditions behind Día de los Muertos. The holiday gives families a chance to honor loved ones who have passed away through altars and ofrendas, offerings, music, dancing, and food. The full festivities of Day of the Dead run between October 31 and November 2, with separate days set out for children and adults to be honored. The belief is that the blockade between the world of the living and the realm of the ancestors is opened, allowing the people of the present and past to mingle together for a brief time.
The local festival gives San Rafael residents an opportunity to immerse themselves in this special tradition and celebrate with the community. Activities and experiences included in the festival are food vendors, interactive dances, cultural performance pieces, music performances, artistic workshops, a procession of decorated cars through the city, and a display of altars by various businesses in the downtown area.
Attending the event is free and open to all ages. The venue for the celebration will be the Albert J. Boro Community Center, which is in Pickleweed Park. Many community-led experiences are promoted with techniques like flyer printing. The festivities will run between 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm on Saturday, November 2.
