Completion date set for San Rafael sports complex
The development of a sports complex in San Rafael has been held up for years due to legal issues, but the litigation is over and the complex is now expected to be completed at the end of 2020.
The complex sits on a 16-acres site close to the airport and Gallinas Creek. So far, the construction team has already completed the 86,000-square-foot shell for the building that will host two indoor soccer pitches, rope-climbing apparatus, a gym for rock climbing, and several other recreational activities. Two outdoor fields will be included as well. Brochure printing for the complex is likely to feature several other sporting activities.
The outer shell was completed months ago. The construction crews are now working on preparing the exterior grounds for parking space and the outdoor fields. They are expected to be completed by the turn of the year as well as a one-megawatt solar power plant which will be placed on the roof.
Planning for the complex’s construction began in 2004. It took until 2012 for the project to gain City Council approval, however a lawsuit was filed soon after which aimed to stop the project because of zoning violations and environmental concerns. The litigation went on for more than a year, which delayed the start of construction until 2016.
Despite the lawsuit, the project’s development team is very proud of the building’s environmentally friendly design. The entire complex is built using 100% recyclable metal and 75% of the steel used was recycled.
