San Diego audiences will have a chance to hear some unusual music soon.
B-Side Players will appear at the Music Box, alongside the group tulengua, for a performance unlike others. The B-Side Players comprise nine pieces, and represent a recent development in music. The band honors the way in which music crosses borders, making it a universal language.
The group uses any beat that attracts them, no matter where it originates or what genre it is, and then adds in a polyrhythmic groove, driven by the horn section. They use this technique to explore the sounds of Brazil, Mexico, Jamaica, and Cuba, accenting the mix with hip-hop, jazz, rock, and funk, and seasoning it further with bits of Boogaloo, Jarocho, Son Montuno, Samba, Salsa, and Cumbia.
The band has been together since 1984 and have won numerous San Diego Music awards. They have released 11 albums, and six singles. Their music is sometimes described as “Latin-flavored soul.”
The group tulengua is a trio comprising Jaime Mora, Amari Jordan, and Alan Lili. The band was established in 2017, and is a bilingual outfit from both sides of the United States border with Mexico. Members were born in both countries, still reside in both countries, and want to show it is possible to forge a connection across the border.
