DRAMA, which is vocalist Via Rosa and disc jockey/producer Na’el Shehade, blends dance-pop, R&B, and technology into a sound that is their own. Rosa was born in Texas, raised in California, and eventually moved to Chicago with her family. Her parents were both members of a reggae band, and she grew up listening mostly to oldies, Sade, Afrobeat and Brazilian music. Once in Chicago, she became associated with THEMPeople, a hip-hop collective.
A Chicago native, Shehade became fascinated with DJ culture when he was a child, and eventually became a music engineer and producer, which led him to professional work, including projects for Bravo and MTV, and working in the studio with talents like Kanye West and Chance the Rapper.
Since their start in 2014, the pair has forged their own trail through hard work and sheer determination, releasing two EPs, “Gallows” and “Lies After Love,” the first in 2016, the second two years later. They finally caught the ear of the label Ghostly International.
