Wanda Sykes is a native of Portsmouth, Virginia who was raised in Maryland. She has made a name for herself as a writer, actress, and stand-up comedian. She first came to notice as a writer for “The Chris Rock Show,” a job that won her a Primetime Emmy Award in 1999. She began her career in stand-up comedy as showcases in Washington, D.C, then relocated to New York City where she opened for Chris Rock at a comedy club.
She soon began landing television appearances and has appeared on “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” Sykes’ character was a recurring role in seasons one and two, and became a regular for the final three seasons. She guest starred on the Larry David show “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and received nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Astress in a Comedy Series for her work in two series, “Black-ish” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
She has numerous film roles to her credit as well, including “Evan Almighty” and “Monster-in-Law,” and voice work in films such as “Rio,” “Barnyard,” and two “Ice Age” sequels. A review of a live performance says:
