The Old Globe Theatre is getting ready to present a world-premiere musical, ‘The Heart of Rock & Roll’, featuring the music of one of the biggest pop bands in history – Huey Lewis & the News.
Lewis has been heavily involved in the production, which is not surprising since he has done his share of acting, including more than 200 performances on Broadway in the role of Billy Flynn in ‘Chicago’. He was bitten by the acting bug as a teenager, but music beckoned more strongly. Between 1982 and 1988, Huey Lewis & the News sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, landing in the Top 10 a dozen times, while three of their songs made it to No. 1. Many of those tunes will be heard in the show including ‘The Power of Love’, and the iconic ‘Heart of Rock & Roll’.
The show is not a biography of the band’s career like ‘Jersey Boys’, a show Lewis says he likes very much. Instead, it is a feel-good story of a young man struggling to make it as a rock singer, but working in a factory as he pursues his dreams.
With hopes that ‘Heart’ will make it to Broadway, theaters opening new productions like this can use poster printing to advertise the show, and distribute as collectors’ items.
Previews begin tonight, September 6, and the show opens September 14, and runs through October 21. Full details are on the theater’s website.
