Ana Gabriel was born in Sinaloa, Mexico, where she began singing when she was six. She later moved to Tijuana where she studied accounting, but also began her singing career in earnest.
In 1977, she got her break when she recorded her first song, “Compréndeme.” She performed well in competitions, and her version of “Ay Amor,” a ballad, went to the top of the Mexican charts, and was on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks for 14 consecutive weeks. The contests and youthful experiences gave her a solid grounding and she released “Tierra de Nadie,” her debut album, in 1988.
As of 2020, Gabriel has released 21 studio albums, 19 compilation albums, and four live albums. She has been nominated for both the Grammy and the Latin Grammy, and garnered 29 Lo Nuestro Awards nominations, winning 13. She has become one of Latin music’s best-loved stars, moving seamlessly among the genres of Latin rock, rancheros, and Latin pop, as well as singing mariachi ballads accompanied only by the guitar.
