Little Italy, a vibrant San Diego neighborhood, is welcoming back one of the summer’s most exciting musical events.
The Little Italy Association of San Diego is teaming up with Marine Band San Diego to host the Marine Band San Diego Summer Concert. The Marine Band San Diego’s main band is a 45-piece ensemble, but splits into other groups: “Sound Strike” plays pop music, and the “Double Time Brass Band” is noted for its New Orleans-style sound.
Music in the Marine Corps has a long history. The United States Marine Band, stationed in Washington, D.C. and known as “The President’s Own,” was founded by an Act of Congress in 1798. It is the oldest continuously active organization of professional musicians in the nation and plays over 500 engagements annually.
Marine Band San Diego is much younger than its Eastern counterpart, having been established in 1921. Stationed at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, the band’s main mission is to support organizations on the depot, including the Recruit Training Regiment. In addition, the band performs at civilian and military events throughout the southwest, and in the San Diego area. Banner printing can provide great decorations for outdoor events like this.
The main band can split into different ensembles including brass band, rock band, jazz combo, a woodwind quintet, brass quintet, a marching band, and a concert band.
The concert is scheduled for July 31, from 6.00 pm until dusk at Piazza della Famiglia, a small public square on West Date Street.
