Roberto Carlos Lange (stage name Helado Negro) is a native of South Florida who was born to Ecuadorean immigrants. As a teenager, he became fascinated by MTV’s program “Liquid Television,” wondering how the videos and animation features were made. His curiosity led him to enroll in the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia as a student of Computer Art and Sound Design. As he studied sound, he focused on experimental art, performance art, and installation, and also participated in experimental art and sound shows. He also began to develop his own music at this time.
The artist was also influenced by the ambient sounds of his early childhood—pounding bass from passing cars, boom Boxes, and the noise of “peñas,” which are late-night parties. The noises became the foundation of Lange’s sound.
He is also a visual artist and has collaborated with David Ellis to develop visual installations and sound sculptures that enlarge on ideas he has presented in his music. A review says:
