Following the successful model pioneered by Disney and Universal, SeaWorld is planning to build a hotel within the theme park.
The hotel at the San Diego venue would be the first for SeaWorld. Park officials are working with Evans Hotels’ president Robert Gleason on the project. Evans Hotels’ holdings include the Bahia Resort, located on Mission Bay.
For years after Disneyland opened in Anaheim, Disney regretted not buying up land near the park to forestall the construction of budget motels that pulled revenues away from the theme park, and cheapened the area as well. When Disney launched Disneyworld in Florida, he bought over 20,000 acres of land, and built hotels inside the park, which now offers more than 26,000 hotel rooms.
With Disney’s lesson in mind, SeaWorld Entertainment is getting ready to develop the first hotel to carry the SeaWorld brand. Although SeaWorld is not as large or well-funded as Disney and Universal, it has determined there is enough space in four of its parks to join in a successful, moneymaking pursuit.
Adding a hotel to an amusement park has proven to be very popular with park guests, who enjoy the convenience of staying in the park and the perks that come with the lodging.
SeaWorld could create colorful Brochures for wide dissemination featuring a sketch of the new hotel and a list of its amenities.
