On Sunday, May 15, San Diego runners had a unique experience; one that allowed them to take in some of the best views in the city.
It was the day of the Bay Bridge Run/Walk, hosted by the U.S. Navy. The annual event raises money for various Navy Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs.
These programs help enhance the quality of life for the military community. Programs include one that provides library materials to personnel on land and sea; and others that encourage personnel to participate in fitness efforts. In and around San Diego, there are more than 500,000 people who are attached to the military in some form, whether they are serving on active duty or in the reserves, retired personnel, family members of these military personnel, or civilians who work on the various bases.
The Run/Walk is four miles in length, starts in downtown San Diego, and ends at Tidelands Park on Coronado. The highlight of the event is the opportunity for participants to cross the Coronado Bay Bridge, which is closed to motorized traffic for the event. The bridge is a San Diego landmark, and rises to a height of 200 feet above the water, so Navy ships can pass underneath the structure. This is the 30th year for the run.
Event organizers could create festive Banners to fly from the bridge to enhance the race.
