Those who enjoy a symphonic concert with classical piano should be in San Diego in May.
The San Diego Symphony Orchestra will perform two concerts with pianist Garrick Ohlsson as its special guest. Garrick Ohlsson is a native of White Plains, New York, and in 1970, he won first place at the International Chopin Piano Competition, becoming the only American to have done so at the time. He also won the Busoni Competition as well as the Montreal Piano Competition, among others. He has been nominated for the Grammy three times, winning once.
He began studying piano when he was eight. Five years later, he was a student at Julliard. His career has been shaped by his work with such celebrated teachers as Irma Wolpe, Sascha Gorodnitzki, Claudio Arrau, and others. He is known particularly for his interpretation of the works of Rachmaninoff.
At the upcoming concert, he will play the notoriously difficult Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 30, by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Also on the program are “Onward” by Brian Raphale Nabors, and the “Concerto for Orchestra” by Witold Lutosławski, who was inspired by folk music from his native Poland.
Robert Spano will be on the podium as guest conductor for the event. The concerts will take place at the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6 at 7:30 pm. The doors open at 6:00 pm. Organizers of this type of event can create programs for audiences by using brochure printing.
