San Diego has a heavy military presence, and marked Veterans Day with a parade, and with the dedication of a bell tower, among other events.
The tower, which cost approximately $400,000, is thirty feet tall and located in Miramar National Cemetery. Bob Baker, who is a successful car dealer in the area, as well as a veteran of the Korean War, contributed $250,000 to the effort. Bill Horn, who is a county supervisor and a veteran of the U.S. Marines, added $78,000 from his office fund.
The bell tower has been built on a knoll, which makes it visible from most of the cemetery. The tower honors the U.S., South Korean, and Greek soldiers who held off the Chinese in 1953 at the Battle of Outpost Harry. Bob Baker, now an active 84-year-old, helped finance a documentary about the struggle, during which soldiers were ordered to hold the ground whatever the cost.
The Veterans Day Parade, the 30th such celebration, started from the County Administration Center at 11:00 am. The parade route was a mile long, winding up at G Street and Pacific Highway. The USS Midway, an aircraft carrier that has been transformed into a museum, was also the site of a celebration.
