The San Diego City Council has given the green light to the One Paseo project, a mixed-use development to be sited in Carmel Valley.
The project is described as ‘dense’, meaning it includes a large footprint, many retail spaces, and housing units as well. However, city officials see the development as a possible model for future projects, since San Diego is running short of space on which to build, but continues to need more offices, retail space, and housing.
The version of One Paseo that recently won approval is the second version of the plan. The first was much larger, and residents opposed it so vehemently that the developer was forced to shrink its retail and office spaces to reduce the amount of traffic it is likely to cause.
About the approval, council members said these types of dense projects are a sensible way to approach San Diego's future, given the shortage of land. They also said they were glad to see new housing being developed outside of the city's downtown, adding that they were happy to see that the developer and residents had reached compromises on the project, since One Paseo could be a model for other developments in the city where dense projects make sense, such as Grantville, Mission Valley, and Little Italy.
