One of the farthest south cities in the contiguous United States, San Diego boasts a warm climate year-round, but native San Diegans who would like to enjoy skating on real ice, as well as home-sick eastern visitors, have a chance to skate on one of three pop-up rinks in or near the city.
In San Diego proper, skaters can try to keep their feet at the rink at Liberty Station, the mixed-use development that has risen on the site of the old Naval Training Station San Diego, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places
.
The ice rink at Liberty Station is known as “Fantasy on Ice”, and is open now through January 3. Proceeds from admissions go to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital.
Just over the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge is the Hotel del Coronado, an all-wooden structure that is famous as the backdrop to the film ‘Some Like It Hot’. The rink here overlooks the beach, and is open through January 7. Part of the proceeds from the rink will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The third rink in the area is in Alpine, at the Viejas Casino and Resort. Alpine is about 30 miles from San Diego, in the Cuyamaca Mountains. The rink is part of an outlet mall located there.
Managers at the various rinks might consider creating festive Banners to decorate their venues. Banners are sturdy and work well outdoors.
