San Diego folks who were eating their lunch outside the Civic Theatre recently enjoyed a special performance by cast members from the San Diego Opera's current production of ‘Tosca’.
The recital, which took place that same day, featured a variety of musical selections from the opera. The ‘Tosca’ concert is the first of four programs titled ‘Opera on the Concourse’.
At noon on March 10, the program will feature a recital by the San Diego Opera Chorus, and on April 21, the music will be from ‘Madame Butterfly’. Finally, on May 12, cast members from ‘Great Scott’ will perform.
‘Great Scott’ is a new opera composed by Jake Heggie, with a libretto by Terrence McNally. The opera had its world premiere in Dallas in 2015, and tells the story of an opera company struggling to survive in a society that would prefer to watch the Super Bowl.
The free concerts each feature duets, solos, and ensembles from the opera currently being performed. The performances are approximately 45 minutes long, and begin at noon, and are the opera's way to say thank you to the city and opera lovers for their support during the year.
