A local radio station, JAMN 95.7, is presenting Tech N9ne, who will appear at San Diego's House of Blues along with three other rappers—Maez 301, King ISO, and Jelly Roll.
Tech N9ne, who was born Aaron Yates in Kansas City, Missouri, is one of the rap genre's most successful independent artists, and one of its most hard working, playing dozens of concerts annually. He was influenced by a mix of styles—the gospel his mother loved; the rock his uncles liked; and the work of N.W.A. and Public Enemy, who were developing confrontational hip-hop. His distinct style, “chopper rap,” brought him to the attention of a number of record labels, leading to his appearance on the soundtrack of “Gang Related,” a 1997 film, and “This or That,” an album released in 1999 by Sway & King Tech.
Tech N9ne spent 2017 and 2018 touring, and has played hip-hop festivals such as Gathering of the Juggalos, Soundset, and Rock the Bells. He is equally at home on the rock scene, performing at festivals such as Knotfest, Rocklahoma, and Rock on the Range.
