Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson was born in New York City, where he has been the Director of the Hayden Planetarium since 1996. The planetarium is part of the Rose Center for Earth and Space, which in turn is part of the American Museum of Natural History.
Tyson has become a recognized personality thanks to his writing and his public appearances. He wrote for Natural History magazine from 1995 to 2005, contributing monthly essays to the publication's “Universe” column. He later published some of the essays in “Death by Black Hole,” which he wrote in 2007, and again in “Astrophysics for People in a Hurry,” which was published in 2017.
He may be best known as the host of NOVA “ScienceNow,” which aired on PBS from 2006 until 2011. He began his podcast “StarTalk” in 2009, and continues to host it weekly. NASA awarded him the Distinguished Public Service Medal in 2004.
