Holiday Wonderland, a much-anticipated annual attraction that started in December, 2014, at Petco Park in San Diego, will not take place this year.
The festive event transformed the ball park into a winter wonderland, and drew 65,000 visitors during its 12-night run. People were excited by a number of unusual and elaborate displays including a Polar Express train, a hill for sledding that comprised 15,000 square feet of real snow (a rarity in San Diego), and a Christmas tree covered with 16,000 lights that towered 40 feet into the night sky.
Although Holiday Wonderland is on hiatus, the park will be decorated for the season, and admission is free. There is no word on whether or not the extravaganza will be back next year.
Shana Wilson, a spokeswoman for the San Diego Padres, said the team put the festival on hold this year so the organization can devote its efforts to March's World Baseball Classic. The classic is an international tournament in which baseball teams from various countries compete. It begins March 7, 2017, with first-round games scheduled for Seoul, Tokyo, Miami, and Guadalajara.
The second round games will be played at Petco Park, from March 14-18, 2017. There are eight teams that could end up playing in San Diego, including Italy, Canada, and the U.S. The championship round will be played at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
