Across the globe, these strange monoliths have popped up in Utah, Las Vegas, Romania, and Russia among other locations. San Diego’s peculiar metal structure was first noticed on Tuesday, December 8 in the Scripps Ranch Marketplace parking lot immediately east of Interstate 15 and Mira Mesa.
The mysterious object proved to be a pleasant distraction for many, with a number of San Diegans stopping by to take a picture of the monolith or even capture a selfie with it.
Companies as well as non-profit organizations often have reason to attract attention to themselves, and often turn to a banner printing service to do so.
Lisa Flanders Gorski, the proprotor of Massage Green Spa in the shopping center, was pleased to see it near her shop and was quoted by NBC 7 as referencing the pandemic and saying:
“We need something fun and different to think about.”
The fun did not last long; however, that same night it was reported to the San Diego Police Department that a group went over to the monolith, knocked it down, loaded it into the bed of a truck, and drove off. It is not known if they had been responsible for putting it in place to begin with.
