A group that includes a Brit, a Spaniard, and two Mexicans is set to appear in San Diego.
Jenny and the Mexicats have an intriguing history. The band started when a Mexican double bassist named Icho Mexicat invited an English vocalist and trumpeter, Jenny Ball, to come to Madrid. Once she was there, Icho called Pantera, his brother, who had a versatile flamenco style, and with whom he played in a punk and rockabilly band in their Mexican hometown.
The final member of the group is David González Bernardos, a colleague with whom Pantera had played flamenco. Bernardos, a Spaniard, plays the cajon. The group coalesced in Madrid in 2008 as Pachucos y la Princesa, which evolved into Jenny and the Mexicats. Inspired by the new sound of their group, Jenny began composing, and the group returned to Madrid to rehearse at a flamenco tablao las carboneras, a venue where flamenco is traditionally performed.
Their first appearance was in the UK at Wonderland in 2008. The festival is a small event raising money for cancer research. Since then, they have released ten singles, three collaborations, and five albums, dropping the latest, “Fiesta Ancestral,” in 2019.
